Junior Tour of Northern California Crowns Winners During the JTNC Tour Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (July 31, 2023) – The 2022-2023 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions this past Tuesday during the JTNC Tour Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
Cambron Nevill and Sarah Lim were both honored as champions within their respective flights during the JTNC Tour Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
In the Boy’s Championship flight, Cambron Nevill picked up his second winners medal on the Junior Tour for the 2022-2023 season. Coming off an impressive season on the Junior Tour, finishing fourth in the Boys Player of the Year rankings, the flourishing talent from Bodega posted solid rounds of 1-under 70 and even-par 71 that saw him card a total of seven birdies over 36 holes. Nevill’s birdie on the 36th hole would prove pivotal in the outcome of the 2022-2023 Tour Championship. Luke Brandler, co-leader going into hole 18 on day two, slipped up and made bogey on his final hole which opened the door for Nevill to claim the title. Cambron would ultimately seal the championship with an up-and-down birdie on the 18th green in front of a gallery of fans watching on. Luke Brandler finished second in the Boy’s Championship flight after a card-off saw him beat out Griffin Chiu with a lower round two score, a runners-up medal for a great two day showing where he carded six birdies with scores of 72-70. Brandler’s highlight of the tournament came during round one where he notched a clutch eagle on the par-5 ninth hole, getting on in two and sinking the putt. This is Brandler’s first medal of the JTNC season, propelling him to T-20th in the Boys Player of the Year rankings.
Third place went to Griffin Chiu, coming in at 142 after consistent rounds of 71-71, this earned Chiu his first top-three finish of the season after playing in eleven JTNC tournaments. Chiu finished the tournament with an outstanding ten birdies on his scorecards across the two days. The Los Altos native ends the season ranked 42nd in the Boys Player of the Year standings.
Fourth place was awarded to Alejandro Formosa who shot 72-73, missing out on a championship medal by three shots.
In the Girls’ Championship flight, Sarah Lim of Saratoga won her first JTNC event of the 2022-23 season with a comfortable lead over the rest of the field. Lim’s season had only been trending upwards up until this point, having seven top-five finishes on the Junior Tour going into the Tour Championship. Lim carded rounds of 74-72 that included six birdies, finishing at 4-over par 146. With the points being amplified for the Tour Championship event, Lim would propel herself up the Girls Player of the Year rankings and finish the season as the fourth best Girl on the JTNC. Cathy Zhang was the eventual second place medalist after losing out to Lim by five strokes, carding rounds of 76-75 to come in at 9-over par 151. Zhang, who has finished in a medal spot twelve times this season, had an unusually quiet tournament carding only one birdie over the 36-hole event. Nonetheless Zhang still took the JTNC by storm this season with stellar play in every tournament she showed up to, making a late push in the season to challenge Asterisk Talley for Girls Player of the Year, ultimately coming in 2nd.
Diya Kumar placed third after posting a 79-76 155, placing in the top three for the first time during the 2022-2023 JTNC season and earning a medal for the first time in ten attempts. Kumar tallied up six birdies and ended the season ranked 24th for the Girls' Player of the Year standings. Fourth place went to Karina Zeng at 14-over par where she posted rounds of 75-81.
In the Boys’ First Flight Championship, Oscar Seem had repeat rounds of 75 (150 total) that included four birdies, enough to be awarded a winner’s medal for the second time this season! Seem appears to have a knack for winning tournaments on the Monterey Peninsula, as his previous win came during the First Flight Tournament at Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey. Seem finishes the season as the 36th best ranked Boys player on the Junior Tour for the 2022-2023 season. Kevin He, from San Ramon, shot 74-78 152 with three birdies to earn second place. This is He’s first medal honors for the 2022-2023 JTNC season, missing out on first place by two shots.
Third place went to Joseph Hart who came in at 155, carding rounds of 76-79 with two birdies, that would reward him his first spot on the podium this season. Fourth place ended in a tie between Julian Koehler and Hayden Thill at 156 to wrap up the top five finishers in the Boys First flight.
In the Girls’ First Flight Championship, Isabelle Duan wins first place with rounds of 74-77 and triumphs over her next closest competitor by three shots. Isabelle accomplishes her first win of the 2022-2023 JTNC season, having earned three previous medal honors but all coming up just shy of first place. Duan carded four birdies, ending the season ranked 27th in the Girls Player of the Year standings. Second place went to Vivien Li, of Pleasanton, coming in at 79-75 and finishing two shots better than third place. Li had two birdies on her scorecard over the two-day event, this is Li’s first time making a top-three finish on the Junior Tour. Myla Havarangsi earned third place via a card-off where she came out victorious versus Isabella Zhou. Havarangsi shot 82-84, carding birdies on two holes and earning her first top-three finish of the season. Myla’s best finish prior to the Tour Championship was a T8 finish at the JTNC First Flight III Tournament hosted at Coyote Creek Golf Club.
Fourth place was awarded to Isabella Zhou whose day two score of 83 was not enough to break the tie for the card-off.
The next event on the JTNC calendar is the JTNC Fall Series I to be held at Cypress Lakes Golf Course on August 19-20 in Vacaville.
