As you may be aware, the USGA and R&A will be implementing revisions to the World Handicap System on January 16.
One of the key changes within the 2024 WHS revision is the treatment of 9-hole scores. When a 9-hole score is posted, it will automatically be combined with an expected Score Differential™ based on your Handicap Index® and count toward your Handicap Index the very next day.
While this change will apply to any 9-hole scores you post beginning January 16, consideration will be given for any uncombined 9-hole scores posted between January 1 and January 15.
So what will happen during the transitory period?
- If you have an uncombined 9-hole score with a date played of Jan.1-Jan.15, when the revisions become effective on January 16, that 9-hole Score Differential will automatically be combined with an expected Score Differential based on your Handicap Index. The result will be the 9-hole score displayed within your scoring record with an 18-hole Score Differential retaining the actual date played, which will be used to calculate your Handicap Index.
- If you have an uncombined 9-hole score with a date played prior to Jan.1, when the revisions become effective, this score will be ineligible for combining with an expected Score Differential. While it will remain in your scoring record, it will not be considered within the calculation of any future Handicap Index.
