The NCGA was saddened to learn of the recent passing of WGANC Legacy Past President Kim Algren.
Kim was an avid golfer, a strong advocate for women and junior girl golfers and an extraordinary leader. She was an attorney by profession and her hobby was being a sous chef at various restaurants in the Bay Area.
Upon retirement, Kim and her husband left the Bay Area and built a home at Winchester CC where she became the Captain of the Women’s Group. In 2014, she was elected by the WGANC to become the North Valley Area Director.
One of her many responsibilities was to manage the Junior Girls program, which became her passion. After much analysis and thought-provoking discussions, she was instrumental in transforming WGANC’s Junior Girls' Fund into a grant program, very similar to PWGA’s program. The WGANC members were very generous in donating to the fund and the monies were used to help supplement junior girls’ golf programs throughout Northern California. Many high school golf teams were able to purchase necessary golf gear that is vital to a team when playing organized golf.
During this time, PWGA sponsored a Helen Lengfeld Memorial High School Girls Tournament in Sacramento. A request was made by Jimmy Ikeda, coach of the San Mateo Girls Golf Team, that a similar tournament be held in the San Mateo area. Again, Kim was instrumental in having WGANC and PWGA form a partnership, and with Coach Ikeda’s help, a second Helen Lengfeld Memorial High School Girls Tournament was established in San Mateo. Subsequently, a third and fourth Helen Lengfeld Memorial High School Girls Tournaments were established in Madera and Red Bluff. These tournaments are held under the guidelines of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
Kim played an integral role in the preservation of the programs and tournaments that WGANC members hold near and dear to their hearts, i.e., Legacy Tournaments, Legacy Open Days, Jr. Girls Grant Program and the four Helen Lengfeld Memorial High School Girls Tournaments. These golf programs continue to this day to promote the game of golf for girls and women of Northern California.
In 2019, during its Annual Meeting, the WGANC recognized her for her
Extraordinary Support and Leadership.
Kim Algren was a true friend and advocate for Northern California women and junior girls’ golfers.
She will be deeply missed by all.
