The NCGA mourns the recent passing of former President Dean Glass.
Glass, who was born in Porterville, was president in 1996, the year that the NCGA's second course, Poppy Ridge Golf Course, opened for play. That same year, Poppy Hills also hosted the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship.
A member at Valley Oaks Golf Course in Valley Oaks, Glass also was involved with Sierra View in Visalia and the Monterey Bay Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians.
Said Glass upon his ascendancy to the role of the president: "I think I am a survivor, I just outlasted everyone else."
Glass was not the first in his family to attain an important position. His father was for years the mayor of Tulare.
A graduate of Tulare High School, Glass picked up golf in 1964, the year he got married.
"I took up the game and was hooked big time," Glass said in a 1996 interview in NCGA Golf Magazine. "Two years later I was drafted and ended up at the (former) Fort Ord. The Black Horse course was just under construction. I played a lot of golf."
Following his discharge from the U.S. Army, Glass returned to the Visalia area.
Glass and his second wife, Jenny, had five children. In recent years, Glass had relocated to Boise. A memorial service is expected to be held in the Visalia area this spring.
The NCGA thanks Glass for his dedication and service to the game. He will be missed.
