Do you know what the defined areas are on a golf course? How many are there, anyways?

The Rules of Golf (Rule 2.2) tell us there are five [*areas of the course*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_8e42de73-2b60-434d-a539-6ad89d5258f7).

### a. The General Area

The [*general area*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_6e4be3e6-ee09-4a6c-b53d-9ab957f853cb) covers the entire [*course* ](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_19dea94e-2caf-4569-bbe5-38e082845c2c)**except** for the four specific [*areas of the course*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_8e42de73-2b60-434d-a539-6ad89d5258f7) described in [Rule 2.2b](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/rule-2.html#_ff1a4e60-9b84-4f60-9416-e25bf2bb8ef0).

It is called the “general area” because:

- It covers most of the [*course*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_19dea94e-2caf-4569-bbe5-38e082845c2c) and is where a player’s ball will most often be played until the ball reaches the [*putting green*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_fb579eec-6bfd-4990-b2ef-742ee45a14c5).
- It includes every type of ground and growing or attached objects found in that area, such as fairway, rough and trees..

### b. The Four Specific Areas

Certain Rules apply specifically to the four [*areas of the course*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_8e42de73-2b60-434d-a539-6ad89d5258f7) that are not in the [*general area*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_6e4be3e6-ee09-4a6c-b53d-9ab957f853cb):

- The [*teeing area*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_449413b0-4e94-4aad-8fd4-629406080b34) the player must use in starting the hole they are playing ([Rule 6.2](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/rule-6.html#_2fa7260b-37b6-492a-ac5d-e542edbe98fd)),
- All [*penalty areas*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_d12c5f9a-37a4-4fe3-837b-f7602de79858) ([Rule 17](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/rule-17.html)),
- All [*bunkers*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_48799f00-3458-47e7-8d74-63a79607e3fb) ([Rule 12](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/rule-12.html)), and
- The [*putting green*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_fb579eec-6bfd-4990-b2ef-742ee45a14c5) of the hole the player is playing ([Rule 13](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/rule-13.html)).

A ball is always treated as lying in only one [area of the course](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_8e42de73-2b60-434d-a539-6ad89d5258f7):

- If part of the ball is in both the [*general area*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_6e4be3e6-ee09-4a6c-b53d-9ab957f853cb) and one of the four specific [*areas of the course*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_8e42de73-2b60-434d-a539-6ad89d5258f7), it is treated as lying in that specific [*area of the course*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_8e42de73-2b60-434d-a539-6ad89d5258f7).
- If part of the ball is in two specific [*areas of the course*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_8e42de73-2b60-434d-a539-6ad89d5258f7), it is treated as lying in the specific area that comes first in this order: [*penalty area*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_d12c5f9a-37a4-4fe3-837b-f7602de79858), [*bunker*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_48799f00-3458-47e7-8d74-63a79607e3fb), [*putting green*](https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-of-golf/definitions.html#_fb579eec-6bfd-4990-b2ef-742ee45a14c5).
