The creation of NCGA member course Poppy Hills literally took a village.

From individuals representing Pebble Beach Company, including Pebble Beach Co. founder Samuel F.B. Morse, to individuals representing the NCGA, including the late Bob Hanna, Bob Moore and John Zoller, there were many, many folks involved in making the NCGA’s dream a reality.

While many of the major actors in the scene are gone, we managed to catch up with a few of the faces that played major roles in the June 1986 opening of the course. And yes, there are many more that we to the day still tip our caps to: Folks like former superintendent Manny Sousa and architect Don Knott.

Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

Renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. of RTJ II Golf Course Architects oversaw the design of Poppy Hills.

Rudy Staedler

An NCGA Hall of Fame member, Rudy Staedler was president of the Poppy Holding Inc. Board of Directors from 1983-1986.

Bruce Charlton

The President and Chief Design Officer for RTJ II Golf Course Architects was one of the Design Associates to Robert Trent Jones, Jr. in the creation of Poppy Hills.
