After a few challenging months the majority of Northern California golf facilities have been given the opportunity to re-open for play, but with the responsibility to do so in as safe a manner as possible. With facilities re-opening, we’re all planning our own 'get back on the course' adventures.
In every case, no matter where you are in the region - things are a bit different now. For the foreseeable future, everyone will be playing with a few modifications to keep things safe and amid local county guidelines.
You’ve probably been reading about some of the modifications recommended to reduce contact. The key thing you need to know is every course is going to have slightly different details about how specific operations are to be carried out. The other key thing you should know is that the USGA has issued guidelines for posting acceptable scores.
In addition, we have compiled a few tips:
- Research the course first! Know what to expect - most courses have the information on their website. Some will not allow walk-up play with prior reservations! Also, some are only open to residents of a specific County or City! You can find courses on the NCGA Online Course Directory.
- Expect to pay online in advance for your tee times. Some courses will have on-site payment but they may ask one person to pay for the group to minimize traffic in the pro shop.
- Check whether the practice facilities are open or have limited space. Most of us are a little rusty so if you can't warm up on site, do so in advance. Now all of those chipping drills in your living room or back yard will get tested.
- Be prepared! We advised you to clean and re-stock your golf bag--hopefully you heeded that advice. With most pro shops closed or retail less available, you’ll need to remember your own socks, gloves, ball markers and sunscreen. You may need your own water as well, and bring a mask just in case you’re required to wear one around the clubhouse or even while playing.
- Enjoy it! Not too many of your friends and fellow golfers got in any practice either, so don't be too hard on yourself. Hopefully all those drills and instructional videos will pay off and you’ll soon be playing better than ever.
Let us know how it all goes on social media--- We’re all in this together!
