Tossing Clubs is a weekly podcast that follows the golf adventures of Frank Zhang, Zach Moses and Aaron Tan! The trio of Northern California golfers shares a mix of golf escapades, course reviews, golf trips, off the cuff musings, as well as interviews with golf's most interesting characters -- tour players, entertainers, coaches, journalists and many more from around the golf world. With roots in the Bay Area and up down Northern California, the crew often highlight their favorite local courses, hidden gems from the region and speak with a range of people making an impact on Northern California golf.

1) What do you guys love about golf?

TC: While we all started the game at various stages of life and for various reasons, there’s plenty of overlap on what draws us to golf.

First, we love the challenge! Golf looks easy but is deceptively hard, and the more we play, the more we appreciate just how complex getting a little white ball into a hole can be. So when we pipe a drive, stick a wedge, or make a 15-footer, we celebrate because we know what could have gone wrong. Golf gives everyone an opportunity to celebrate the good things in life, especially when they require some effort to achieve.

Second, golf provides an avenue to meet and connect with people. Young or old, rich or poor, 30 Handicap Index or scratch – it does not matter. Four hours on a golf course is alway a great time because there will always be the opportunity to meet someone new.

Finally, the three of us grew up playing a variety of other sports before golf like basketball, tennis, football, baseball, and volleyball. These other sports have very fixed fields of play. Golf is unique in that every course is different and offers its own challenges. Part of the fun is just traveling to new places and seeing the natural beauty of the world.

2) How did the podcast get its name?

TC: We don’t encourage tossing clubs on a golf course, but there has been a handful of times where it may have happened. :) It’s just a playful term that relates to golf and us tossing golf conversation back and forth on a podcast. Zach’s significant other actually had the idea so we can’t take full credit.

3) How are you guys inspiring others to play more golf?

TC: We want to get more people excited about going outside and playing golf. Northern California has some of the best golf courses in the world. Yet, many aren’t sure where to start, may be intimidated about the game, or are looking for new ways and places to play. By sharing our own experiences on the podcast and inviting guests throughout the golf industry onto the show, we want golfers and non-golfers alike to get excited, entertained and inspired about picking up a club and heading to the course.

We also purposefully bring on a variety of guests onto the show with different identities and backgrounds. For a long time, golf has been slow to welcome people from all walks of life and we’re doing our part to grow the game for everyone.

4) Do you guys have a favorite NorCal event or time of year?

TC: Northern California has great golf all year long, but the fall is particularly special. The weather is absolutely perfect and the aesthetic is top notch. Morning dew, amber light, cooler temperatures, and colorful fall foliage make for a spectacular backdrop on the golf course. Also, the golf courses are in their best shape having already undergone a whole season of pampering from ground keepers. It’s a beautiful time of year to get your final swings in before the winter season comes.

A fun side note – each fall we host our annual Tossing Clubs scramble golf tournament. The blend of competition and camaraderie with all our friends and the northern California golf community make this a really special event. We’re about to kickoff planning for this year’s event. Keep an eye on our socials for more information.

5) Any tips for NCGA members?

Don’t be afraid to travel outside your home city to play new golf courses. There’s so much great golf up and down Northern California. From Yocha Dehe outside Sacramento to TPC Harding Park in San Francisco to Poppy Hills down in Monterey – you can find high-quality course layouts, great conditions and different challenges throughout the region, at a variety of prices that fit your budget.

Also, take advantage of NCGA discounts, especially for tee times at NCGA partner courses. You can play at some really great courses for an affordable price through NCGA. If you’re anything like us, you love good value!
