NCGA Hall of Famer Randy Haag and partner Steve Sear, the 2024-25 NCGA Senior Player of the Year, have become a lethal duo.
Sear and Haag carded a final round 6-under 65 Wednesday at Poppy Hills to come in at 18-under 195 to claim their second straight NCGA Senior Four-Ball Championship title. The team of Corey West and Todd Doss was second at 13-under 200 after a final round 67.
As per the significance of the victory, Sear and Haag become just the third team to go back-to-back, joining Haag and Chip Lutz (2016 and 2017) and Rob Thompson and Bob Berg (2007 and 2008). While the win was Sear's fourth career NCGA title, the victory marked Haag's 13th NCGA Senior crown, pushing him into a tie for the all-time lead with fellow Hall of Famer Jeff Burda at 13. Overall, including both 'regular' and Senior titles, Haag now is the all-time leader at 29.
The two, who first met decades ago, reunited at the 2024 NCGA Senior Championship. That year, Haag birdied the 17th and 18th holes to defeat Sear by two shots. Last year, Sear returned the favor, winning the NCGA Senior Championship by three shots over the field.
Now the two are combining their powers like a pair of superheroes.
"It starts like having a partner like Steve. He won the Senior Slam last year and Player of the Year. He doesn't miss many shots," Haag said.
"Randy has always been so good, for what, 40 years. I don't know what it is when we play together. I just lose all the negative thoughts. We just have fun," Sear said. "We really enjoy the NCGA tournaments."
The two never made a bogey over their 54 holes. They also made their push on the back-nine, carding rounds of 30, 32 and 31.
"We got away with one in the second round. I made a par putt on No.15 from off the green," Haag said. "Steve made a long par putt today on No.2."
The team of Bob Niger, the reigning NCGA Super Senior Player of the Year, and Bill Bunce placed third at 201 after a final round 68.

Super Senior Championship

Brothers Doug and Jim Williams finally got their turn at the top.
The Williams brothers carded a final round 4-under 67 that included a clinching birdie on the par-5 18th to come in with a 54-hole total of 10-under par 203, good for a one-shot win over the team of John Jaramillo and Dean Prince.
For the Williamses, it was sweet redemption. In 2015, in the Senior portion of the championship, they lost in a heartbreaker when Jim Williams missed a short putt on the 18th hole. They also fell in a five-hole playoff to Randy Haag and Chip Lutz in 2016.
This time around, their 96-year-old mom Jane, was among those there to congratulate them. Their sister, Alice, was also there.
"We didn't know where we stood when Doug made the birdie putt on 18," Jim Williams said. "It was a long quest. We've been trying for 10 years to do this. We're a tight family. It's a special treat for us."
The brothers had magic on their side. Doug chipped in three times during the round. Jim also just missed out on a hole-in-one on the 15th hole.
"This one was special for me because I got to play with Jim," Doug said. "Everyone is so nice, and they're nice to my mother."
Prince and Jaramillo shot a final round 69 to finish at 204. They'd birdie both holes 15 and 18 but couldn't close the gap. Third place was a tie at 205 between the teams of 2025 champs Craig Calkins and David Ujihara and Neil Robinson and Scott Hoyt.

Randy Haag and Steve Sear are a day away from making history.
Haag, an NCGA Hall of Famer, and Sear, the NCGA's defending Senior Player of the Year, will head into Wednesday's final round of this year's NCGA Senior Four-Ball Championshoip holding a comfy three-shot lead over the field. On Tuesday, Haag and Sear posted a 5-under 66 to move to a 36-hole total of 12-under 130.
The teams of 2024-25 Super Senior Player of the Year Bob Niger and Bill Bunce and Todd Doss and Corey West are both tied for second at 133 after rounds of 63 and 66, respectively.
What's at stake should Haag and Sear win? The duo, who first met decades ago and reunited at the 2024 NCGA Senior Championship, would become just the third team to go back-to-back, joining Haag and Chip Lutz (2016 and 2017) and Rob Thompson and Bob Berg (2007 and 2008). A win would also mark Haag's 13th NCGA Senior title, pushing him into a tie for the all-time lead with fellow Hall of Famer Jeff Burda at 13.
In winning last year, Haag and Sear set the championship record for lowest 54-hole score, 21-under 192.
But there's still golf left to be played. Niger and Bunce were solid in the second round, going 4-under on each nine. Doss and West are also within striking range should they get hot.
Super Senior Championship
Dean Prince and John Jaramillo continued to be the ones to chase. The two carded a second round 3-under 68 to move to a two-day total of 7-under 135.
Just a shot back at 136 are the tandems of Neil Robinson and Scott Hoyt and Doug and Jim Williams, who shot rounds of 68 and 67, respectively.
Jim Williams won the Super Senior title in 2022, then playing with partner John Watson.

Randy Haag and Steve Sear are at it again.
Haag, an NCGA Hall of Famer, and Sear, the NCGA's defending Senior Player of the Year, grabbed the lead in this year's Senior Four-Ball Championship with a solid 7-under 64 at Poppy Hills. The two won the title last year with a championship record of 21-under 192.
Haag and Sear, who first met decades ago, reunited at the 2024 NCGA Senior Championship. That year, Haag birdied the 17th and 18th holes to defeat Sear by two shots. Last year, Sear returned the favor, winning the NCGA Senior Championship by three shots over the field.
On Monday at Poppy Hills, Haag and Sear got off to a somewhat slow start, posting a modest front-nine 34. On the back, however, the two started cooking before finishing with a 30 that included three straight birdies from holes No.14 through No.16.
In second place, at 5-under 66, is the brother tandem of Mike and Tony Padilla. Padilla, another former NCGA champ (he defeated Haag at the 2017 NCGA Senior after draining a 40-foot-plus putt on the closing 18th for birdie), is a college basketball referee. He recently worked the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men's tournament and will work the Sweet 16 round later this week.
Four teams are tied for third place at 67--Todd Doss and Corey West, Jeff Wilson and Todd Barsotti, Joseph Schiebold and Mark Quintel and Mike Phillips and Bob Ledoux.
Looking ahead, Sear and Haag and the team of Joey Ferrari and Bob Niger (Super Senior) co-hold the 36-hole record with a score of 16-under 126 at Poppy Hills in 2025.
Super Senior Championship
Dean Prince and partner John Jaramillo grabbed the lead after posting an opening round of 4-under 67 that included back-to-back birdies on holes Nos. 16 and 17.
Four teams are just a shot back at 68: Matthew Free and Kent Coalter, Todd Palmaer and Rich Petit, Steve Hoyt and Neil Robinson and Craig Calkins and David Ujihara.
