Scratch Flight

NCGA

This time around, Alamo resident Mike Perchak had to sweat it out.

Perchak sank a clutch 3-foot birdie on the par-5 18th hole at Poppy Ridge to hold off defending champion Ian Fisher and Nicholas Sako by one shot and win the 61st NCGA Public Links Championship on Tuesday for his third career NCGA crown.

The difference for Perchak was having to overcome some nerves. In his previous two NCGA victories, both at the 2023 and 2024 Valley Amateurs, the 34-year-old won by a more comfortable four and five strokes, respectively.

"I was nervous down the stretch, but you want to be in that position," said Perchak, who finished the event with a two-day total of 7-under 137. "That is why we are out here. We want to try and play our best. As cliché as it is, you have to take it one shot at a time."

As he stepped on the 18th green, Perchak had no idea where he stood in the standings. Sako, a former standout at St. Mary's, was already in the clubhouse at a total of 6-under par 138 after a final-round 68. Fisher was at 5-under and just off the 18th green in two, and Perchak was at 6-under and in the fringe. Fisher's up-and-down attempt for eagle missed, leaving him to settle for a birdie and 6-under total. Perchak's first putt, a 10-footer for eagle, missed. But he'd sink his birdie putt to seal the win.

"I hit a great second shot into the green. I was thinking with the eagle putt, just get it close," Perchak said. "I hadn't looked at the scores.  When my birdie putt went in, and I heard the guys up at the clubhouse clapping, I knew I must've won it."

The putt on 18 wasn't Perchak's first clutch putt of the day. Just a hole prior on the par-3 17th, he sank a birdie putt to get back to a total of 6-under. A hole earlier, he also jarred a 10-foot putt, that one to save par and keep him in it. He'd finish with a final round 70.

"I've been putting in a lot of work lately. The front-nine I just got through it. On the back-nine, I started feeling it more," Perchak said. "I love Poppy Ridge. I love that we are coming here again."

Fisher, who was looking to become the first back-to-back winner since Scott Hardy in 2010-11, was hurt in part by a slow start, going 3-over through his first two holes. Sako, meanwhile, got off to a blistering start, carding a front-nine 30 that included four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 7th. His big stumbling block came on the par-4 11th, when he carded a double-bogey after a mishit pitch shot from off the green.
