NCGA

Call it the Super Senior double.

David Ujihara of Brea earned his second solo NCGA title Tuesday by capturing the 17th NCGA Super Senior Championship at San Luis Obispo Country Club.

The 72-year-old AmateurGolf.com member took first at 1-under 143 after coming from a stroke behind with a final-round 1-under 71. He defeated co-runners-up John McClure and Steve Hoyt, who came in at 147 after matching rounds of 73.

The lone player to finish the 36-hole event under par, Ujihara was steady in the finale, posting three birdies to go against just two bogeys.

Last year, Ujihara won the NCGA Super Senior Amateur at Spyglass Hill. In March 2025, he took home his first NCGA crown--that being at the NCGA Super Senior Four-Ball Championship with partner Craig Calkins. Calkins, who was the first-round leader at SLO CC with a 71, fell back to T-4 after a 77.

Bob Niger, the event's defending champion and the 2025-26 NCGA Senior Player of the Year, also placed T-4.

Legends Division

In the Legends division (ages 75-plus), Charles Richesin took the title with a 36-hole score of 15-over 159 after a final-round 81.

Affectionately known as ‘Chuck’, the 77-year-old Richesin also played well at the NCGA Senior Championship at Poppy Hills in September. There, the longtime Woodbridge G&CC member would card rounds of 74-73-78 during the championship, at one point even flirting with the lead.

That was with Poppy Hills playing around 6,500 yards.

The 81 at SLO CC was his highest round of the year.

Craig Calkins is the player to catch after opening day of the 17th NCGA Super Senior Championship.

Playing at San Luis Obispo CC, Calkins, who hails from Manhattan Beach, posted a 1-under 71 that included four birdies to go against three bogeys. Calkins' big run came on the front nine, where he carded three consecutive birdies from holes Nos. 4 through 6.

In second place at 72 is David Ujihara. Winner of the 2025 NCGA Super Senior Amateur at Spyglass Hill, Ujihara was atop the leaderboard for most of the day. Starting on the back-nine, he'd open with an eagle on the par-5 10th and tacked on birdies at holes Nos. 12 and 14.

After making the turn though, Ujihara slipped with four bogeys.

In a tie for third at 73 are 2025-26 NCGA Senior Player of the Year Bob Niger and Jim Williams. Niger won the title last year at Bayonet/Black Horse GC.
