Cameron Park's James Sewell first began playing in NCGA events when he was in his 20's.
He's now 65, and can finally say he's an NCGA champion. He did it in a way he'll never forget, too.
Sewell, the No.6 seed, captured the NCGA Super Senior Amateur title on Thursday at Spyglass Hill, defeating runner-up Andy Gabelman on the 19th hole. The difference came on the first playoff hole (the par-5 1st), where Sewell sank a 45-foot birdie putt.
"It has been 20 years since I played here, so it was a blast," said Sewell, a retired insurance agent for State Farm. "I never thought I'd win an NCGA championship. I have to say 'Yay' to my wife, Arlene. I did it, baby!"
For the No.9 seeded Gabelman, it was a heartbreaker. He had a chance to win on the 18th hole, but missed his 3-foot putt for par. Sewell had moments earlier made bogey on the 18th.
The two see-sawed throughout the match, with neither ever leading by more than two holes. Still tied through 14 holes, Sewell took a 1-up lead with a clutch birdie on the par-3 15th. That lead held up until the 17th, where Gabelman won with a par to again knot things up.
"I'm looking forward to playing here at Spyglass again. I feel like I know the course now," Sewell said.

A new champion will be crowned in the annual NCGA Super Senior Amateur on Thursday at Spyglass Hill.
The winner will also collect their first NCGA title.
Andy Gabelman, the No.6 seed from Carmel, will take on No.9 James Sewell of Cameron Park, after both advanced through Thursday's semifinals.
Gabelman, a member at Monterey Peninsula CC, moved on via a 2 and 1 win over No.2 Jim Williams. Sewell, meanwhile, defeated No.13 Doug Williams, 5 and 3. Earlier this year, the Williams brothers won the NCGA Super Senior Four-Ball title.

Mark Morgan took another step towards his first NCGA Super Senior title.
Morgan, the NCGA Senior Player of the Year honors in both 2020 and 2021 and the No.1 seed, opened match play with a solid 7 and 6 victory over No.16 Terry Foreman.
Foreman, who won the NCGA Super Senior title in 2024, did not have his best day, going 7-over par through the first nine holes. The opportunistic Morgan took advantage, building a 7-up lead through nine.
It didn't hurt that Morgan played his front nine at 3-under par.
Also moving on through to the quarterfinals were brothers Jim and Doug Williams. The No.2 and No.13 seeds, respectively, won their matches, 5 and 4, and 1-up. Earlier this year, the two teamed up to win the NCGA Super Senior Four-Ball title.
A big upset was No. 14 Chuck Richesin knocking out No.3 Chris Miller, 1-up.
Wednesday's play will see the quarterfinals and semifinals at Spyglass Hill. The 18-hole final will be Thursday at Spyglass.

Mark Morgan has had tons of success as a senior, including earning NCGA Senior Player of the Year honors in both 2020 and 2021.
This week, Morgan will go for a Super Senior crown. Winner of the 2017 California Senior Amateur, Morgan will be the No. 1 seed when match play begins Tuesday at Poppy Hills. He'll face No.16 Terry Foreman, who earned the last qualifying spot after a playoff on Monday.
Foreman is also a previous NCGA champion, having won the 2024 Super Senior.
Defending champion David Ujihara will enter match play as the No.8 seed. He was the No.8 seed last year when he won, defeating then back-to-back champion and NCGA Hall of Famer Casey Boyns.
Tuesday's action will consist of the Round of 16 of match play at Poppy Hills. Wednesday's play will see the quarterfinals and semifinals at Spyglass Hill. The 18-hole final will be Thursday at Spyglass.
