Dev Rahal has been through a lot over the years. On Sunday at Poppy Hills, all of his troubles at least briefly went away,
Rahal carded a final round even-par 71 to hold off Tom Natividad and Abraham Attouleh by a stroke to win the annual Weekend Net Tour Championship. The 47-year-old just hung on, carding an 8 on the 18th hole that for a moment had the scoring room buzzing.
"It's awesome. It means a lot," said Rahal, who finished the 36-hole evebt with a total of 4-under 138. "The last few years I've had a lot of back problems and surgeries. I have been trying to come back and play at a high level. So it's very satisfying."
Rahal in 2021 flew to Germany to have his back surgically repaired. He went to Germany because he could have two procedures done at the same time, something that was not offered here at home.
While he didn't crack any champagne, Rahal did get wet.
In Saturday's first round, the course was hit by rain. In the second round, on the par-5 9th Rahal again experienced moisture--at least his feet did. His approach shot on the hole landed in the penalty area. Rahal opted to play out, taking off his shoe in the process. He'd end up making a crucial par.
"I told myself, with the rain, that everyone is out here having to deal with it. So just keep playing and do what I can," Rahal said. "The harder the conditions, the better it fits my game since I don't hit fairways and greens."
Both Natividad and Attouleh came in at 139 after rounds of 70 and 71, respectively. Natividad would earn second place in the ensuing card-off (lower score for the day).
Along with the championship win, Rahal earned Player of the Year honors. He'd finish the season with 3,250 points, with 2,000 of them coming thanks to his victory.. Shawn Andrade finished second with 2,820 points.
