Byron Washburn’s golf journey goes back to his childhood in Marysville, when he first picked up a club around the age of 7.
From Marysville, he took his game to Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, playing for the Pirates during the 1960’s.
“I had the unfortunate experience of having P.E. (Physical Education) class on Pebble Beach Golf Links,” quipped Washburn.
Today a spry age 80, and a longtime resident of Monterey, Washburn’s passion for the game still burns just as bright. It’s just that he isn’t the one swinging a club. Instead, he’s the one making sure those who are swinging the club are following the Rules of Golf.
“Golf has been an important part of my life since those early days in Marysville,” said Washburn with tears in his eyes.
Unlike most NCGA volunteers, Washburn never had anyone suggest that he become a volunteer. Instead, he made the decision solely on his own.
“I was retired, and I was looking for a purpose in my life,” recalled Washburn.
In 2025, Washburn officiated his 19th NCGA season. He enjoys it just the same as he did on day one nearly two decades ago.
“I enjoy the people that I work with, the staff of the NCGA and the other volunteers,” Washburn said. “It’s a fine group of people that I get to work with. We all have the same goals.”
As for getting involved as an NCGA volunteer, Washburn said it’s an easy question to ask yourself—‘Do you enjoy golf?’
“Being a tournament official, you get involved with the growth of the game. Not only are you working at adult events, you are also officiating at junior events,” Washburn said. “Over my 19 years, I have witnessed tremendous growth in Northern California golf.”
