NCGA

August 14, 2025

David Ujihara will be adding another NCGA title to his trophy room.

Ujihara denied NCGA Hall of Famer Casey Boyns a chance for a three-peat as the Brea native took home the NCGA Super Senior Match Play title with a 2 and 1 victory at Spyglass Hill.

This is Ujihara's second NCGA title this season. In March, he took home the NCGA Super Senior Four-Ball Championship with partner Craig Calkins.

"It is kinda of nice to win something else," Ujihara said. "For this victory to be an individual one, I am super stoked for this one."

Boyns lead the match 1 up heading into the back nine. The match flipped on the par-4 10th hole when Ujihara made bogey while Boyns made double.

The AmataurGolf.com member took the lead with a clutch birdie on the par-4 13th hole and never looked back.

"I was trying to keep Casey from adding to his Hall of Fame status," Ujihara laughed. "I was just trying to keep up with Casey."

Ujihara would make two more birdies on the back nine before the match wrapped up on the par-4 17th hole.

This is a week that the 71-year-old will never forget.

The finals for this week's NCGA Super Senior Championship are set.

It'll be No.8 David Ujihara versus two-time defending champion and No.3 seed Casey Boyns.

Ujihara, who hails from Brea, only had to play five holes. His semifinal match ended early, as his opponent Terry Foreman had to concede due to a shoulder injury on the 6th hole.

Boyns, meanwhile, got past No.2 seed Jim Williams 4 and 3 in what was a re-match of last year's final.

An NCGA Hall of Famer, Boyns is looking to become the first three-peat winner of the event. With a victory, the longtime Pebble Beach Golf Links caddie will also tie fellow Hall of Famer Jeff Burda for the most NCGA Senior victories all-time (13).

 The 18-hole final is Thursday.

No.1 seed Bob Niger got knocked out in the Round of 16 by former NCGA Super Senior Player of the Year Chuck Richesin.

That opened the door, with one of those getting through being No.8 David Ujihara. Ujihara, who went on to defeat Richesin, 4 and 3, will next face No. 5 Terry Foreman in Wednesday's semifinals. Foreman, the NCGA's defending Super Senior Player of the Year, advanced to the semis via a 2 and 1 win over No.4 Jeff Duncan.

Wednesday's other semifinals match is a repeat of last year's finals--with No.2 Jim Williams getting a chance at redemption against No.3 Casey Boyns. In last year's finals, Boyns won 2 and 1.

Boyns, an NCGA Hall of Famer, is looking to become the first three-peat winner of the event. With a victory, Boyns will also tie fellow Hall of Famer Jeff Burda for the most NCGA Senior victories all-time (13).

 The 18-hole final is Thursday.

Day 1- August 11, 2025

The final 16 spots were up for grabs in the 2025 NCGA Super Senior Match Play Championship stroke play qualifier.

Salinas native Steve Donnelly earned medalist honors as he posted 1-over 72 at Poppy Hills.

The Corral de Terra CC member made a double bogey on the par-3 11th hole. That would be one of his few mistakes as he made four birdies on his round.

Finishing one shot back was a fellow 831 neighbor in Santa Cruz native Rich Gleghorn.

Gleghorn who  made it to the quarterfinals in 2023 made two bogeys on the back nine which is where he started his round. He was able to recover with a birdie on the par-3 2nd hole.

The real drama was for the final three spots in match play.  David Barrnett, John Driver, Charles Richesin and Rick Jones finished in a tie for sixth place at 5-over par 76.

Barnett, Driver and Richesin will live to see another day as they advanced via a sudden-death playoff.

Like the Senior Division, the Super Senior division will have matches at Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hill.

The Round of 16 matches will be at Poppy Hills on Wednesday morning while Spyglass Hill will host the quarterfinal matches on Wednesday afternoon.

Bob Niger who is currently leading the Super Senior Player of the Year standings will be the No. 1 seed as he will take on the No. 32 seed Richesin at 7:30 a.m.

NCGA Hall of Famer and defending champion Casey Boyns will be looking for his third straight Super Senior Match Play title.

The Monterey native will be the No. 3 seed as he takes on No. 14 seed David Barnett. Boyns will look to tie Jeff Burda for his 13th career NCGA Senior title. That match will begin at 9:10 a.m.
