NCGA

An NCGA Hall of Famer walked away with the trophy from the inaugural NCGA Senior Women's Amateur.

Tina Barker, who was part of the Class of 2024, captured the title on Wednesday at Spyglass Hill with a 4 and 3 win over Lynn Couillard.

With the victory, Barker moved to third place alone (six wins) on the all-time NCGA Women's win list, behind only fellow Hall of Famers Lynne Cowan and Marianne Towersey. A member at Green Valley CC in Fairfield, Barker's other wins include the 2021 and 2023 NCGA Senior Women's Stroke Play Championship.

"It's quite an honor to be the first champion. We really appreciate the NCGA creating this event," Barker said. "It was really fun and great competition. I hope we have more of it."

In the 18-hole final, Barker and Couillard were tied after 10 holes.  On the par-5 11th, Barker jumped to a 1-up lead with a birdie.

From there, Barker carded four straight pars, while Couillard went par-bogey-bogey-bogey.

On the bag to help Barker was her spouse, Dolly Coleman.

"It's good to have someone to talk to. You want to play the golf course, not the other person," Barker said. "She will talk to me and help bring me back up if I hit a bad shot."

Couillard, of Irvine, was making just her second NCGA championship appearance. Earlier this year, she played in the Women's Mid-Am. While she lost, she also loved the new event.

"I had a great time," Couillard. "Everything was so well organized. The staff and volunteers were amazing."

NCGA

Following a historic morning of quarterfinals play, players in the inaugural NCGA Senior Women's Amateur headed over to Spyglass Hill for the semifinals.

Play will resume Wednesday morning after being suspended due to darkness.

The eight players who advanced to match play were Tomi Marcus, NCGA Hall of Famer Tina Barker, Karen Garcia, Lyn Couillard, Joy Robinson, NCGA Hall of Famer Lynne Cowan, NCGA Hall of Famer Sally Krueger and Dorothy Donnelly.

Robinson, a member at nearby MPCC, had the upset of the day, knocking out Cowan, 1-up. Robinson had a 2-up lead through the 14th hole. Cowan won 15 with a par to trim the deficit to one, but that was as close as she'd get, with the two tying the next three holes.

The inaugural NCGA Senior Women's Amateur got underway Monday with stroke play qualifying at Poppy Hills. By the end of the day, a number of familar faces were in the mix.

Earning the No.1 seed for match play was NCGA Hall of Famer Lynne Cowan. Cowan, who's won the Senior Stroke Play Championship a record five times, carded a 3-over 74 that included four birdies.

Claiming the No.2 seed was fellow NCGA Hall of Famer Sally Krueger, who carded a 76.

The match play bracket of eight players also includes NCGA Hall of Famer Tina Barker (77), Lynn Coulliard (77), Karen Garcia (77), Tomi Marcus (79), Dorothy Donnelly (80) and Joy Robinson (81).

Donnelly is also fresh off the winner's circle, having won the Oregon Golf Association Super Senior Women's Championship.
