Junior Tour of Northern California Crowns Winners During Fall Series IV Tournament at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex’s Mackenzie & Arcade Creek Courses
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (September 26, 2023) – The Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions during the Fall Series IV Tournament at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento.
Hartej Grewal and Gianna Singh both shot under-par to win their respective Championship Flights, with Grewal finishing at 9-under par and Singh at 7-under par to secure their first wins of the 2023-2024 season. In the First Flight division, Logan Song and McKynlee May also grabbed their first winners medal of the new season with Song taking the Boys First Flight and May taking the Girls First Flight.
In the Boys Championship Flight, Grewal committed early to minimizing the mistakes in his game as he carded a perfect bogey-free opening round of 5-under 67. Grewal’s opener included six birdies as the Boys Championship flight teed off on the Arcade Creek course for round one. Round two, on the Mackenzie course, ended up having a familiar theme to it as Grewal went on to card a 4-under 68 that included five birdies and just one bogey, carding three birdies during the final six holes to beat out runner-up Kailer Stone. This is Grewal’s first win on the 2023-2024 season after he finished 4th in the 2022-2023 Player of the Year rankings.
The runner-up was awarded to Kailer Stone who carded rounds of 68-68, with a bogey-free first round, finishing at 136 and earning himself a spot on the podium. Stone carded eleven birdies over the weekend, but ultimately came up short when he bogeyed the eleventh hole during round two that proved to be the difference between him and Grewal. Ayden Fynaut took third place after rounds of 71-66, Fynaut carded eleven birdies with the highlight of his weekend coming during round two as he made six birdies on his final nine holes propelling him into a medal spot. Fourth place was awarded to Jacobus Brakkee at 6-under par, shooting rounds of 68-70.
In the Girls Championship Flight Gianna Singh finished at 7-under par with rounds of 69-68, stringing together thirteen birdies over the weekend and setting herself up for a dominating win. Singh made a statement early on when she went 4-under through the first ten holes on day one as she put in a superb performance while playing the Mackenzie course. This is Gianna’s first medal of the 2023-2024 season, triumphing over the next best Girls Championship competitor by five shots.
Second place was awarded to Darla May Dela Torre after a card-off saw her shoot the lowest second round versus Lily Peng, who also ended the tournament tied for second place at 141. Dela Torre carded a resounding 5-under 67 on Sunday making six birdies and just one bogey to claim her runner-up medal. Third place went to Lily Peng who shot 71-70 over the two days and ultimately missed out on second place via the card-off with second round totally not being enough to see out Dela Torre. Fourth place was awarded to Taylor Baker, carding rounds of 69-75.
In the Girls First Flight, McKynlee May won her first tournament of the 2023-2024 season after she shot a steady 8-over par 152 for the weekend. May’s highlight of the tournament was during play of round two, carding back-to-back birdies during the final stretch of play between holes 15 through 18, eventually leading to a two-shot win over Alyssa Quilao. May made 6 birdies over the two days with birdies on the fifteenth and sixteenth holes proving to be the most pivotal in crowning her as champion on day two. Second place was awarded to Alyssa Quilao, of Rancho Murieta, where she finished at 10-over par 154 for the weekend, making four birdies and seeing out third place by four shots. Third place in the Girls First Flight was given to Vivien Li after she had rounds of 79-79 finishing at 158, finishing five shots ahead of her next closest competitor Amy Lin. This is Li’s third top-five finish of the 2023-2024 season which places her at tenth on the Player of the Year rankings.
In the Boys First Flight, Logan Song carded rounds of 73-74 to come in at 147. Song would eventually win by four strokes as he finished the tournament 3-over and four shots ahead of the second-place finisher, Dillon Stefani. This is Song’s first win on the Junior Tour for the 2023-2024 season, carding five birdies on his way to victory in the Boys First flight and moving up to seventeenth in the Player of the Year rankings. Second place went to Dillon Stefani who shot rounds of 76-75 for 151, carding three birdies over 36-holes. Noah Duncan, Micah Meraz-Ha, and Steven Maita were all tied at 152 after 36-holes, with Micah Meraz-Ha taking the third-place medal after he shot the lowest second round of the bunch. Meraz-Ha carded a 1-over 73 on day two which granted him the advantage in the card-off between him and his competitors, with Duncan shooting a 76 and Maita shooting an 81. Duncan and Maita had to share the honors for fourth place after they both missed out on the card-off versus Meraz-Ha.
Hole in one highlight: Aidan Sweeney aced the par-3 16th hole during play of round two on the Mackenzie course in the Boys Championship flight!
Next up on the Junior Tour of Northern California’s schedule is the Fall Series V tournament, taking place at Bay View Golf Club on September 16-17.
